Your Insulation Experts
Every house is different. Your Above All insulation estimator will pay attention to issues of ventilation (soffit and roof) as well as vapour sealing. A comprehensive approach is needed, particularly when a house has issues of high humidity, condensation/frost in the attic, water leakage through the ceiling or walls, or ice dams. It is important that the job be done right the first time.
We regularly insulate 1-½ and 2-½ story houses. In such houses, the horizontal areas can be insulated with blown-in cellulose and fibreglass batts can be affixed to the back side of the knee walls. Exterior walls that are empty can be filled with dense-pack cellulose to R-13. Cellulose is made from shredded newsprint, treated with fire retardants. Because of its higher density than blown-in fibreglass, it is particularly effective in reducing air infiltration and air leakage.
We recommend blown-in cellulose as an upgrade treatment for attics. Manitoba Hydro recommends that attics be upgraded to R-50, and offers rebates for doing such work. An Above All estimator can submit the proper Hydro Rebate application on behalf of the homeowner. In certain situations, particularly where vapour leakage and associated condensation has been a problem, the existing insulation can be removed and 2” of polyurethane spray foam can be applied to the attic floor or to the sloped (cathedral) areas, topped up with cellulose.
